Pequest Fill

History of the Pequest Fill

Pequest Fill is a fill located along the Lackawanna Cutoff between Andover and Green Township, and at construction, was the largest railroad embankment in the world.

The Pequest Fill has a 3-mile span and was constructed from 6.625 million cubic yards of fill material. The Pequest Fill can be viewed from many roads, however the most prominent is US Route 206 which crosses below it.

In 1985, the Cut-Off was sold to Jerry Turco, who was a private land developer, and planned to use the material from the Pequest Fill for the Westway Project in New York City. However, this never occurred as the state purchased the Cut-Off in 2001.

The Pequest Fill will be apart of the restored Lackawanna Cut-Off if Amtrak decides that they are going to run their service to Scranton. NJ Transit will only run service up to just before the Pequest Fill, at the future Andover Station.
